Join our Mastodon Server for Free
Like Twitter, but hate the trolls? You might be interested in something called Mastadon.
What is Mastadon? It’s kind of like Twitter, but open source and distributed / federated like E-mail. Instead of Tweets, you compose “Toots” which can be up to 500 characters.
Like E-mail, anyone can run their own Mastadon server so you can follow someone by using their full handle @[email protected], or just by using their short handle @stevejobs if they’re on the same server.
The cool thing about this is that it puts a lot more control back in the hands of the users. You don’t have to worry about getting targeted with fake reports, or dealing with a bunch of trolls. Each server owner can use common sense rules to figure out who to allow and who to block, and the server admin can even block an entire server if they don’t like the way the moderators there are running things.
It’s not meant to replace Twitter –– just be another alternative that’s more open and more chill. It’s not some big public party where bad people are watching you, but just a smaller, chiller, safer, more open social network that you control. For web developers, it’s actually based on an open standard called ActivityPub.
If you’d like to join Mastodon you can join on any server and follow me. Or you can join the Whole Mars server and get a Whole Mars Mastadon address, which is free and open to the public. This server welcomes all, but will quickly block anyone who is rude or trolling excessively.
